United Way rewards couple with a trip to the Super Bowl

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) – Beverly and Scott Griner have a big year ahead of them.

After all, they will be celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary later this year and then just got another reason to celebrate. An all-expense paid trip to the Super Bowl in Miami.

You might say it was the game inside the game. It was called the March to Miami. United Way's contest to generate new first time donations.

It all came to a conclusion at the Colts complex Wednesday.

Ten participants put their name in to win two tickets to Miami and the Super Bowl.

"And the winner is Beverly Griner," Greg Fennig the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer announced after the winning name was drawn.

Beverly was so shocked she could hardly move, much less speak.

"I'm going to the Super Bowl," her husband Scott, who didn't have that problem, exclaimed from the crowd.

"It's a big birthday year for me. I would rather not say. Just had a rough 2019. Maybe this is 2020 will be a great year, so I guess it is," Beverly said.

"They got tickets, hotel room and air fare to Miami for the Super Bowl," Greg Fennig announced.

The Griner's admitted they forgot about the contest shortly after they had entered last October. Fennig explained how the contest worked.

"After every game we pulled someone's name who submitted. We came up with ten and then from that, did this event," Fennig said.

"I am still shaking," Beverly said. "My legs are shaking," Scott added.

So now they have two and half weeks to prepare.

"I'm going to make some phone calls," Beverly said. "No one is going to believe we won," Scott said. "Who are we going to call first," Beverly wondered. "Probably your mom and dad," Scott answered.

After that they better call work and ask for some time off.

In case you were wondering, since the Colts are not in contention, Beverly is cheering for the Chiefs. Scott is just happy to be married to Beverly, who he referred to today as his good luck charm.

The American Red Cross also giving football fans a chance to win a trip to Super Bowl LIV in Miami by giving blood.
