ATLANTA (WTHR) - Tyler Perry is known for playing a number of different characters.

Thursday, he played Santa Claus for Walmart shoppers in Georgia, paying for all the layaway items at stores in East Point and Douglasville near Atlanta.

The bill reportedly came to more than $430,000.

Perry tweeted a video saying he wanted to remain anonymous, but came forward since "nothing stays secret these days" to break the good news.

"I know it's hard times, a lot of people are struggling. I'm just really, really grateful to be able to be in a position to do this. So God bless you. Go get your stuff! Merry Christmas," Perry said.

Shoppers who had placed items in layaway before 9:30 a.m. Thursday just have to pay a penny to take it all home.
