Trucks crash, block I-465 on south side

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - A crash involving multiple trucks blocked all lanes of Interstate 465 just west of Interstate 65 on the south side Monday morning.

The crash just after 7:45 a.m. involved three semi-trailers, a flatbed trailer, a box truck and a passenger car.

Because of a fuel spill, INDOT advised the closure would last most of the morning. All lanes were cleared after 11 a.m.

Three of the truck drivers were injured, along with one passenger. All were taken to area hospitals but were said to be in good condition.

West of that crash, an earlier crash that happened around 8:15 a.m. just east of State Road 37 had already slowed westbound traffic back to the area of the second crash.

Crash investigators believe the first semi slowed to a stop in the backup from the Harding area crash, and another semi, the box truck, a third semi, the flatbed and the car caused a chain-reaction crash in the right lane.

The box truck left the interstate and stopped in the grass. The flatbed was carrying steel rods which came off the truck and broke through the windshield of the next semi.

The rods went completely through the front and into the rear bedding area of the cab where one of the men was sleeping. Fortunately, neither of the men in that truck were seriously injured.
