Major I-465 closure gets underway on southeast side

INDOT have closed one direction of Interstate 465 on the southeast side of Indianapolis for 15 days.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Friday night the construction chaos around Indianapolis hit a whole other level.

INDOT closed all eastbound lanes of I-465 east of I-65 on the south side of Indianapolis all the way up to I-70 on the east side.

The closure began at around 9 p.m. Friday and will last until Aug. 24. All lanes will be closed.

After Labor Day, crews will start on the opposite direction of I-465 from I-70 down to I-65 on the south side.

As part of the closure, U.S. 421 and the Shadeland collector lanes will be closed, as well.

The full closure means road crews will be able to accomplish more in a shorter amount of time. Maintenance crews will also have a chance to move freely within the closure to clear drains, repair signs and guardrails and do other work.

Indianapolis Police will be watching 14 intersections the Post Road, Raymond street crossing is number one on their list.

"A back to back road nightmare because everyone is going to try the quickest path," said Shelley Bates, who lives in the area.
