INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — INDOT is taking advantage of fewer people on the roads during Indiana's stay-at-home order to speed up construction projects in the works.
Beginning Monday, April 13, the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 will close between the North Split to Interstate 465 for 30 days. All lanes and ramps will be closed.
The westbound lanes between I-465 and the North Split will close April 23, also for 30 days.
The stay-at-home order has dropped the amount of traffic approximately 40 percent on average throughout Indianapolis, according to INDOT. That's compared to the week before the stay-at-home order went into effect.
INDOT will take this time to accelerate previously planned construction projects to they'll be ready before major events are rescheduled.
If you do need to travel that route, here are detours:
- From the airport to I-70 eastbound: Take I-70 eastbound to I-465 southbound to I-70 eastbound
- From downtown Indianapolis to I-70 eastbound: Take I-65 southbound to I-465 eastbound to I-70 eastbound
- From I-70 westbound to downtown Indianapolis: Take I-465 southbound to I-65 northbound to downtown Indianapolis
- From I-70 westbound to the airport: Take I-465 southbound to I-70 westbound on the southwest side
The eastbound I-70 lanes and ramps are scheduled to be reopened on May 13. The westbound I-70 lanes and ramps are scheduled to reopen May 23.
