INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Up to 120,000 drivers will be impacted with another major interstate closure.
Starting at 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, INDOT will close I-465 southbound and westbound between I-70 and I-65 on the southeast side for two weeks.
While there is a list of alternative routes, one of the easiest options is to actually plan your route in advance by using your smart phone and turning off the highways feature.
Access the option by putting in your destination, and then, tap the blue "Directions" button.
Then, you'll need to scroll up before you tap "Go."
Slightly less noticeable, you'll see "Driving Options" in the left corner. Hit that, and then, toggle over to turn on the "Avoid Highways" option, and click "Done" in the top right corner.
You'll return to your trip options and simply click "Go."
Waze is another popular app to know what's happening on the road.
Start by touching "Search" in the bottom left corner.
That brings up the main menu. Tap the icon that looks like a wrench in the top left corner.
From there, you'll select "Navigation," and then, toggle on the "Avoid Freeways" option.
Click the top left back arrow, and you're good to enter the address of your destination and begin your detour journey.
Other apps and phones have similar options. Go to your settings, and turn on the avoid highways, freeways, or interstates options.
