Tech basketball player checked for injury after crash involving IPS bus, car


INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Metro police are investigating whether a pick-up truck and car were illegally racing when the car struck a bus loaded with Indianapolis Public School students.

It happened just before 11:00 p.m. Friday in the 4500 block of East 46th Street near Emerson.

According to police, the driver of the car is alleged to have hit the rear of an IPS bus, then landed overturned in a ditch.

Police said the driver tried to leave the scene in a passing truck. Two people were being detained by police. One is being investigated for impairment.

Officers said the bus was carrying students from Arsenal Tech High School. Tech's basketball team played Anderson Friday night.

A basketball team player went to the hospital to be checked for injury.

“They were going eastbound on 46th," said IMPD Capt. Robert Trout. "The vehicle rapidly approached from the rear and ran into the back end of them. That vehicle then spun around and rolled. The school bus, one of the students was complaining of pain in his back and was transported to Eskenazi for treatment and evaluation. A passenger in the vehicle that was injured in the rolling that happened after the collision was also transported to Eskenazi.“
