Teachers targeted in car burglary spree

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Some local school teachers are learning a tough lesson about safety after a series of "smash and grab" crimes.

Targeting their cars, someone is stealing their belongings.

It's been happening at night while the teachers were asleep inside dormitories in Indianapolis.

Shattered glass remains on the ground shows where a thief had a field day in the middle of the night.

The teachers in training woke up Monday morning to windows smashed out and their belongings gone.

The driver of a 2014 Honda CRV not only found her front passenger window smashed out, but the thief also broke out a back window.

The burglar got away with a small amount of cash after hitting a 2016 Cheverlot Cruze.

The same person is suspected of hitting about a half dozen cars in all, stealing gift cards, food and electronics that were spotted in the cars.

Thieves more mostly looking for the money-holders: purses, and wallets are at the top of their list, followed by laptop bags, briefcases and backpacks. And, of course, shopping bags.
