Talladega gives Dale Jr. his dad's old race car

Dale Earnhardt Jr. gets behind the wheel of his father's 1979 race car.

TALLADEGA, Ala. (WTHR) - Retiring NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. got a very special gift Friday at Talladega Superspeedway.

Officials at the track presented Earnhardt with the 1979 Chevrolet Monte Carlo that his father, Dale Sr., drove to the Rookie of the Year title that year. "Junior" posed for pictures, then hopped in and took the car for a spin - at a moderate speed - around the track.

Earnhardt explained that the State of Alabama actually owns the car, but since it's on permanent loan, he plans to take it home to Mooresville, N.C. and show it around the family's shop.

Earnhardt makes his final start at Talladega Sunday in the Alabama 500. The race starts at 2 p.m. on Channel 13.
