INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) – The Indianapolis Fire Department is investigating the cause of an early Sunday morning fire.

The fire started just before 5 a.m. near Keystone Avenue and Washington Street.

Fire officials told Eyewitness News at the scene that three homes were damaged or destroyed three homes. One of the homes only had minor damage to the attic.

They believe the fire started in a vacant two-story home and then spread to the two neighboring homes on either side.

About 12 people have been displaced. IFD Victims Assistance is working with the Red Cross for shelter for the victims.

The fire was put under control in about an hour. One firefighter sustained a slight injury while trying to rescue a cat. The cat did not survive.

Neighbors tell fire officials that there may have been squatters in the vacant home.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
