(NBC News) - E-cigarettes are most commonly thought of as a method to help smokers drop traditional cigarettes, but it may be having the opposite effect for teens.

A new Yale University study of 800 high school students found teens who use e-cigarettes are at a higher risk of becoming smokers than those who don't vape. On the other hand, smoking did not predict teens' future use of e-cigarettes.

The study also found the use of e-cigarettes and traditional cigarettes among youth are both on the rise.
