ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. (WTHR) - State Police are investigating a police action shooting Sunday morning in Elkhart County.

Nobody was hit but two officers weapons were fired.

Police say around 3:00 a.m., Elkhart County Deputy Justin Yoder tried to stop a red Mazda for a traffic violation near County Road 4 and County Road 9. The driver, identified as Michael Christian, 27 of Elkhart, did not stop and led Yoder and Sgt. Nathan Lanzen of Elkhart Police on a pursuit to an apartment complex where Christian got out and ran.

More police arrived and Christian tried to get into an apartment when, during a physical struggle, Lanzen’s handgun discharged. Yoder reportedly fired his handgun, too.

Christian was arrested on several charges from the pursuit by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.

Yoder is in his fifth year with the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department. Lanzen has been a member of the Elkhart Police Department for 10 years.

The results of the State Police investigation will be turned over to the Elkhart County Prosecutor for review.
