State police investigating crash that killed school bus assistant

JENNINGS COUNTY, Ind. (WTHR) — Indiana State Police is investigating a fatal crash involving a school bus that happened around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Sgt. Stephen Wheeles said the crash involved two vehicles. It happened at the south split of State Road 7 and State Road 9 in North Vernon.

No students were on the bus at the time of the crash.

Jennings County School Corporation said only a bus driver and a bus assistant were on the bus, as they were just starting their route. The school bus assistant died as a result of her injuries.

We are sorry to communicate some very sad news today. This morning one of our buses C138 was involved in an accident. There were no students on the bus at the time of the accident. Unfortunately, it is with heartfelt sadness that we regret to inform you that the bus assistant, Mary Boyd, did not survive. We will have counseling services available for any student who rides her bus and for our transportation department. Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers.
