Indianapolis, June 21 - A deputy campaign manager for Governor Joe Kernan was selected Monday as the new state Democratic Party chairman.

The Democratic State Central Committee formally elected Kip Tew as the replacement for Joe Hogsett, who this month said he would step down after about 16 months in the position to run for attorney general.

Tew was Marion County Democratic chairman from 1995 to 1997. He has been on leave from his position as a partner with the Indianapolis law firm Krieg DeVault to work on Kernan's campaign.

Tew is 42 years old and is married to Robin Tew, executive director of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.

He lost a campaign last year for a seat on the Indianapolis City-County Council.
