SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WTHR) - This will be the last year the Brickyard 400 runs in September. Starting in 2020, the race will be moved to the July 4th weekend.
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is working with NASCAR to improve the fan experience at the Brickyard 400. Like the Indy 500, they want the Brickyard 400 to be an event experience and they say having it on Independence Day Weekend will increase that feeling.
"NASCAR called us and said, 'Hey we are really interested in trying to do this!' and at first we weren't exactly sure and then we thought this could be a lot of fun!," said Doug Boles, President of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. "We own Memorial Day weekend - kicking the summer off here with the Indy 500, so to carry it on through to Independence Day weekend and celebrating the Midwest and what we care about: being Americans."
Planning for the 27th annual Brickyard 400 is already underway.
