Hamlin wins at Kansas City as NASCAR opens 2nd half

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — NASCAR kicked off the second half of the cup season after a 10-day break Thursday night at Kansas Speedway.

Denny Hamlin took the lead with 13 laps to go and took the checkered flag. He has clinched a playoff spot, along with pole-sitter Kevin Harvick, who finished fourth in the race, Brad Keselowski, who finished second, and Joey Logano.

Ryan Blaney, Alex Bowman, Cole Custer, Austin Dillon, Chase Elliott and Martin Truex Jr. have also clinched spots in the field of 16 with wins this season.

Due to driver and crew safety, NASCAR has decided to cancel practice or qualifying on race weekends for the rest of the season, and use a random draw based on owner points to seed fields for the last eight races.
