RACE BLOG: Simon Pagenaud wins the Indy 500!

After leading a total of 36 laps at the Indy 500 over the course of his career, Pagenaud led for more than 100 today and pulled out the win in spectacular fashion over Alexander Rossi.

4:15 p.m. - Winners drink milk!

3:57 p.m. - Simon Pagenaud has won the 103rd Running of the Indianapolis 500! Alexander Rossi, Takuma Sato, Josef Newgarden and Will Power round out your top 5 finishers.


3:48 p.m. - Drivers burned seven laps under Yellow. The Green Flag is out for the final 13 laps.

3:37 p.m. - The Red Flag is upgrading to a Yellow. Your top 5 starting the final 20 laps:

1) Alexander Rossi
2) Simon Pagenaud
3) Ed Carpenter
4) Josef Newgarden​
5) Takuma Sato

3:36 p.m. - Sebastien Bourdais has been cited for making "avoidable contact" in that crash. Talking to the media after the crash, Rahal said, “I’m just very disappointed. It’s just another year to sit and think about it. I respect Sebastien as a driver, but I don’t respect that move.

“At those speeds, that’s how you kill somebody. I’m just not a fan of squeezing and putting people in those positions.”

3:15 p.m. - The Red Flag is out on Lap 180.


3:10 p.m. - After an incredibly clean race, Graham Rahal and Sebasien Bourdais crashed after tapping tires in Lap 178. Felix Rosenqvist, Zach Veach and Charlie Kimball were caught in the fallout.


3:01 p.m. - Your top 5 at Lap 165:

1) Josef Newgarden
2) Simon Pagenaud
3) Ed Carpenter
4) Alexander Rossi
5) Conor Daly

2:49 p.m. - Before today, Simon Pagenaud had led a total of 36 laps at the Indianapolis 500 over the course of his entire career. Today? He's led 100 out of 147 so far. He's followed by Carpenter, Newgarden, Bourdais and Rossi as we're back under Green.

2:31 p.m. - YELLOW FLAG after Marcus Ericsson spun out while coming into Pit Road. Meanwhile, Alexander Rossi had some trouble getting out of the pits on Lap 138... and was NOT happy about it. Rich Nye reports it was some kind of problem with the fuel hose.



2:22 p.m. - Your top 5 at Lap 120:

  1. Simon Pagenaud
  2. Alexander Rossi
  3. Ed Carpenter
  4. Josef Newgarden
  5. Sebastien Bourdais

2:11 p.m. - Jordan King's crew member who was hurt earlier has been identified as Chris Minot. He was taken to IU Health Methodist for evaluation and treatment, but his injuries are not life-threatening.


2:09 p.m. - 101 laps are now in the books - that's the minimum required for an official Indianapolis 500, which is good news with the threat of rain delays still hanging over the Speedway. Live Doppler 13 Meteorologist Sean Ash says the heaviest storms have stayed to our south so far, but there are still showers out west that could cause delays.


2:06 p.m. - Kyle Kaiser has been checked, cleared and released from the Infield Medical Center.

2:01 p.m. - Your top 5 at Lap 90:

  1. Simon Pagenaud
  2. Ed Carpenter
  3. Josef Newgarden
  4. Alexander Rossi
  5. Sebastien Bourdais

1:53 p.m. - We're back under Green on Lap 80. Simon Pagenaud continues to lead the field, while Will Power will start from the back after hitting a crew member in pit lane.


1:48 p.m. - It looks like Kyle Kaiser's day is over after his crash.


1:46 p.m. - Shortly before Kaiser's crash, a member of Jordan King's pit crew appears to have been hurt when he was hit by a tire in the pit. No word on his condition.

1:45 p.m. - YELLOW FLAG is back out after Kyle Kaiser crashed in Turn 4.

1:26 p.m. - IndyCar reports Pagenaud has now led more laps (37) than he had his entire career at the 500 before today. He leads at Lap 50, followed by Will Power, Ed Carpenter, Josef Newgarden and Alexander Rossi.

1:22 p.m. - Helio was assessed a penalty for the pit incident. Meanwhile, Pagenaud re-took the lead on lap 42.

1:19 p.m. - Helio Castroneves and James Davison had a close call on pit row. Helio clipped Davvison's car, popping off one of Davison's tires.


1:15 p.m. - Pole-sitter Simon Pagenaud led the pack until he finally had to pit in Lap 32. The rest of the leaders soon followed so Pagenaud was back to 2nd place by Lap 38, behind Rosenqvist.

1:13 p.m. - Your top 5 at Lap 30:

  1. Simon Pagenaud
  2. Will Power
  3. Ed Carpenter
  4. Spencer Pigot
  5. Josef Newgarden

1:06 p.m. - Colton Herta is officially out of the race. He still has two more years left to become the youngest driver to ever win the race.


1:02 p.m. - Your top 5 at Lap 15:

  1. Pagenaud
  2. Power
  3. Carpenter
  4. Pigot
  5. Newgarden

1 p.m. - We're back under green.

12:52 p.m. - Colton Herta, who started in position 5, tried to pit with apparent engine problems but wasn't able to make it all the way in. Yellow flag while trucks got out onto the track to give him a tow.


12:48 p.m. - GREEN FLAG!



12:40 p.m. - "Lady and Gentlemen: start your engines!"

12:38 p.m. - Jim Cornelison, who sings for the Chicago Blackhawks, performed the traditional "Back Home Again in Indiana."


12:25 p.m. - Music superstar and coach on NBC's "The Voice" Kelly Clarkson sang the National Anthem. This was her third time singing the anthem at the Indianapolis 500.


12:20 p.m. - An Honor Guard posted the colors, followed by winner of NBC's "The Voice" Chevel Shepherd singing "God Bless America."
