Former Indiana University basketball star Keith Smart is battling cancer.
The Miami Herald reported Tuesday Smart has taken his second leave of absence from the Miami Heat to undergo more treatment to fight the disease.
Smart, an assistant coach for Miami, missed three weeks in December after a rare form of skin cancer was found on his jaw. The Herald reports his return from this latest leave "is likely to be measured in weeks, not days."
Smart is best known for making the game-winning basket in the 1987 NCAA Championship game, giving the Hoosiers a 74-73 win over Syracuse and the school's fifth national title.
