Ben Davis basketball's 'gentle giant' ready for switch to college football

"I was always the biggest guy in my class," Dawand Jones said.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - If you watch just a minute of a Ben Davis basketball game, you'll notice Dawand Jones.

He is a giant on the court, and has been a nightmare for visiting teams since 7th grade.

Jones has always stood out, as we noticed recently when Eyewitness News got a peek at some childhood pictures.

"I was always the biggest guy in my class," Jones said.

His number one fan is his mom, Deanna Jones. We asked Dawand if he hears his mom in the stands while he's playing on the court.

"No, but I do hear my auntie," he said. "She goes nuts. You hear bad calls, you'll hear from her."

And while basketball is his favorite sport, he's giving it up. College football is his calling.

"I grew up loving it," he said. First thing I picked up as a kid."

Every college football program in the country wanted him. He chose Ohio State.

Mom knows her son is one of the lucky ones.

"It's a blessing because there are so children that would like to go on to play college football, basketball or just another sport at the next level, and by the grace of God, he was able to be challenged enough to get that blessing," said Deanna.

Jones has the talent and the size to make it to the NFL in a few years.

"It would be tears of joy. It's not just Ben Davis behind my son, my family, my co-workers, my friends, it's so many people that believe in and have supported my son," she said.

And no matter where his talents take him, Dawand says he will never forget where he grew up.
