WHITELAND, Ind. (WTHR) - It's a place where young racers chase their dreams.
The sounds of screaming karts on the south side goes back 60 years.
In recent years, though, the upkeep became too much, and the owners wanted to bulldoze it.
That's when Sarah Fisher and her husband Andy came to the rescue.
"When we learned it could have been turned into a parking lot, we wanted to prevent that because we want somewhere for our kids to race," Sarah said.
So they forked over some big bucks, rolled up their sleeves and after lots of old-fashioned Hoosier hard work, Whiteland Raceway Park is back to first class.
Sarah's passion for racing comes naturally. Her family has been in the fast lane for many years.
"My grandpa had a go kart track in the late 40s, so for Andy and I to have a go-kart track now, we're carrying on the tradition," she said.
A very special Hoosier tradition, at that. From high above in Chopper 13, we got a good look at how amazing the raceway looks.
The lights come on this Saturday night for the first event. Over 50 racers have already signed up.
"Our whole family will feel that sense of pride. My husband, Andy, has been here non-stop for the past four weeks," Sarah said.
Life has come full-circle for this retired race car driver.
"My kids are gonna race," Sarah said. I feel bad for my mom. I know what she went through now."
