INDIANAPOLIS — STORY SPONSORED BY SHEPHERD INSURANCE
Medicare Part C is also known as Medicare Advantage Plans. Mandy Baker with Shepherd Insurance explains, "These are health plans offered by private insurance companies that assume the benefits of original Medicare Parts A and B." Medicare Advantage Plans provides coverage for:
- Hospitalization
- Medical Coverage
- Prescription Drugs
Baker elaborates, "There's usually copays or coinsurance involved with prescription plans. And oftentimes there's a maximum out of pocket which helps limit the cost exposure from original Medicare. These plans do have networks, so it's important to check doctors and hospitals to make sure that individuals are staying within a network that will provide coverage."
While Medicare eligible individuals are not required to have Medicare Advantage Plans, Baker shares, "it is recommended that they have some form of Medicare insurance to help limit the cost exposure from original Medicare."
Medicare open enrollment season occurs from October 15 - December 7. During this Annual Election Period (AEP), individuals may change Medicare coverage choices that will go into effect on January 1st.
