LEBANON, Ind. (WTHR) - A student in Lebanon was surprised Tuesday when his father showed up after nearly a year serving overseas.

Spc.Kevin Goudreau was deployed for the Indiana National Guard, serving in Syria, Iraq and Kuwait. Goudreau showed up at Lebanon Middle School during an assembly Tuesday to surprise his son, Matthew.

“I wanted to see him, but I wanted it to be kind of special for him. So the idea popped into my head, 'Hey I’ll just surprise him at school,'" said Goudreau.

Matthew said he wasn’t expecting to see his dad for about another month and at first wasn’t sure if it was him.

“I was super happy. Because I have been waiting and waiting for this moment,” said Matthew. “At the moment, I didn’t really recognize you because of the mustache. The mustache threw me off.”

Goudreau is back home for the foreseeable future and does not have any additional deployments set.
