Shots fired in northwest side apartment burglary attempt

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) – A west side woman is on edge after someone tried to get into her neighbor's home, then targeting hers.

Shots were fired before the incident was over.

It happened in the Oaks of Eagle Creek apartments on the northwest side Thursday afternoon.

First, the suspect tried to get into an apartment on one side of a corridor. Then he moved to another apartment and that's when things really got dangerous.

“It's a good neighborhood, I don’t understand,” said victim Tequita R., who asked us not to share her full name or show her face.

She said she moved to the complex to feel safe.

“When my boyfriend tried to ask who he was, he never responded,” she said. “He was still trying to get in with the crowbar so in the midst of all that going on my boyfriend opened up the door and he had a gun so my boyfriend slammed the door back.”

The would-be burglar eventually ran away. Hoping for a chance to see the man’s face, Tequita's boyfriend gave chase.

“When my boyfriend tried to identify him, he shot at him,” she said.

Investigating officers learned the same man banged on the door just across the hall and blocked the peephole. The neighbor showed Eyewitness News paper she found stuck to her peephole.

Outside, police found shell casings and the crowbar the suspect dropped during the getaway.

Tequita is now taking new preventive steps.

“All I can say is for people to get an alarm system to protect themselves and their homes,” she said.
