JASPER COUNTY, Ind. (WTHR) — A truck full of bagels caught fire on Interstate 65 Sunday.

An off-duty state trooper saw the truck smoking heavily around 5:30 p.m. while he was driving southbound on I-65 about 6 miles south of Rensselaer. The trailer's rear axle had caught fire in the northbound lanes.

By the time the trooper turned around and stopped the semi, the brakes were on fire and flames had begun spreading to the trailer. The rear tires on the trailer exploded due to the heat coming from the brake fire.

Police found 38,000 pounds of frozen bagels loaded in the truck. The fire department put out the trailer fire, and the right lane of the highway was closed for around seven hours while crews cleaned up the roadway.
