Another counselor files complaint

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — A second counselor at Roncalli is filing an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission discrimination complaint.

Lynn Starkey is a co-director of guidance at Roncalli high School.

She is alleging discrimination and hostile work environment based on her sexual orientation.

Starkey and her partner had a civil union in 2015.

After fellow counselor Shelly Fitzgerald was placed on leave because of her same-sex marriage, Starkey says principal Chuck Weisenbach questioned her about her civil union.

The complaint alleges the principal has not asked other employees about violations of church teachings other than herself and Fitzgerald.

The complaint also says Starkey has had to take on the work of Fitzgerald during her suspension and the actions taken against Fitzgerald by Roncalli makes Starkey feel unwelcome at the school.

Starkey is alleging she "has suffered severe emotional distress, pain and suffering, and mental anguish as a result of the Archdiocese and Roncalli’s discriminatory actions."

A release from Starkey's attorney says this is the first step before a lawsuit can be filed.

Eyewitness News has reached out to Roncalli and are waiting for a response.
