NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (WTHR) - The heroic teacher who tackled the suspected shooter at Noblesville West Middle School will be honored later this year at his alma mater.

We learned Friday that Southern Illinois University is welcoming back Jason Seaman for homecoming this fall.

They shared the news on Twitter, announcing Seaman as the grand marshal.

Calling him "not only a hero who protected his students" but also "a four-year letterman on the defensive line" from 2007 to 2010.

The 7th grade science teacher took three bullets while stopping the teenager accused of opening fire in his classroom last month.

The student who was shot, Ella Whistler, is facing a long recovery ahead.
