INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — The City-County Council adopted a proposal Monday that again makes it illegal to ride an electric scooter on the sidewalk.

The ordinance was required after a new state law took effect July 1. The law calls the scooters "electric foot scooters," not motorized vehicles, which is how Indianapolis refers to them in its ordinance. The state law allowed scooter riders to use them on sidewalks and greenways.

Indianapolis is still able to ban scooters on sidewalks and greenways, but needed approval of the ordinance Monday night to move forward.

Now, violators can receive a $20 ticket for using a scooter on an Indianapolis sidewalk.
