School administrator comforting child draws cheers on Facebook

MARION, Ohio (WCMH) — A photo circulating on social media shows an 8-year-old boy lying on the concrete at his school waiting for a school bus, and a man lying beside him offering comfort.

The boy named LJ is a third grader who deals with Down syndrome and autism, according to NBC affiliate WCMH in Columbus, Ohio.

The photo was by Amber McKinniss, who works as an aide at Garfield Elementary. The man in the picture with LJ is Garfield Assistant Principal Jon Smith.

“I had to take the picture,” McKinniss wrote on Facebook. “It was the most amazing thing I’ve seen! Our hearts melted and LJ enjoyed it.”

McKinniss sent the picture to LJ’s mom, Steph Compton, and Compton posted the photo Thursday, thanking Smith for helping LJ through a “moment.”

“It’s really awesome to know from a parent’s standpoint, that there are people that care that much about your child. To get down on the ground, and lay on the ground with them to make sure that they’re alright,” said Compton.
