Samantha Smith announces new marriage, baby on the way

Samantha Smith visits her husband Andrew in the hospital.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — The widow of former Butler basketball player Andrew Smith made two big announcements on her blog this week.

Samantha Smith said she's gotten remarried and has a baby on the way!

"Nearly three years after the hardest days of my existence, life has gotten a whole lot more beautiful," she wrote. "With tears running down my cheeks as I write this, I am elated to share that I’ve remarried, and we are expecting our first little one."

In the blog post signed "Samantha Smith-Michael," she discusses her life since Andrew's death, writing that she battled depression and "going through the motions" of life. She said that low point is when she met her new husband, Nick.

"I never saw this kind of beauty in life coming again, but it’s made me a believer in the best kinds of surprises," she wrote.

Smith-Michael married Andrew Smith in 2013 shortly after he graduated from Butler. He died in January 2016 after a battle with leukemia.

To help others in need of bone marrow transplants like Andrew, Smith-Michael started a non-profit corporation called "Project 44" in his honor. She said she's going to continue Andrew's legacy while raising and supporting her new family.
