TAMPA, Fla. (WTHR) - A former Colts and Ball State player died in a Florida shooting over the weekend.

Eric Patterson, 26, was shot just after 5 a.m. Saturday inside the home he shared with a roommate, according to WFLA. As of Monday morning, Tampa Police hadn't confirmed Patterson was the victim, but WFLA and the Tampa Bay Times each confirmed it independently.

The roommate told police he heard commotion from the living room, and came out to find Patterson shot, lying on his back. He also saw an unknown suspect, who then ran away.

EMTs took Patterson to the hospital, where he later died.

No word yet on motive, but investigators say it doesn't appear to be random.

Patterson grew up in Tampa before going to Ball State and then playing for both the Colts and the St. Louis Rams.
