Rensselaer man dies after falling through ice

JASPER COUNTY, Ind. (WTHR) – Conservation Officers are investigating the death of a Rensselaer man who fell through ice Saturday afternoon on a Jasper County pond.

According to a DNR statement, Timothy Powers, 48, of Rensselaer and Anthony Ballone, 31, of Jasonville were ice fishing on the private pond when both men fell through the ice.

Ballone was able to reach the shore and call 911.

He tried to reach Powers but was unable to do so.

Rensselaer Firefighters were able to pull Powers out of the water, but he passed away at Franciscan Health Rensselaer.

Ballone was treated and released from the hospital.

According to Conservation Officer, neither man was wearing safety equipment.
