INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — New Year's Eve is one of the busiest nights for police, and the Marion County Sheriff's Office would like to keep officers focused on true emergencies.

That means avoiding making calls to 911 unless there is a true life-or-death emergency. For all non-emergencies, call 317-327-3811. That includes calls about illegal fireworks and loud music or parties.

Call 911 for emergencies including suspected drunk drivers, gunshots, assaults, medical and fire emergencies.

If you accidentally call 911, stay on the line instead of hanging up. Dispatchers are required to call back, and that could use up more time than staying on the line.

Cell phone users can also dial 311 in Marion County to call the non-emergency line.
