INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — The National Council for Home Safety and Security has announced its ranking of the safest cities in Indiana for 2018.

The association strives to inform consumers about home safety and security.

These are the top 10 safest cities, according to the group:

  1. Zionsville
  2. St. John
  3. Carmel
  4. Fishers
  5. Dyer
  6. West Lafayette
  7. Westfield
  8. Crown Point
  9. Brownsburg
  10. Jasper

Indianapolis came up last on the list, at no. 58.

To compile the list, the group reviewed the most recent FBI Uniform Crime Report statistics in addition to its own population data and research. Cities that did not submit a complete crime report to the FBI and cities with populations of less than 10,000 people were not included.

Rankings are based on the number of reported violent crimes, including aggravated assault, murder, rape and robbery. The group also considered property crimes including burglary, arson, larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft.
