Rain holds off for Indianapolis 500, severe thunderstorm warnings issued

SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WTHR) - A thunderstorm hit Indianapolis Motor Speedway just before 6 p.m., drenching the track and the few people still trying to leave the facility.

Lightning and heavy rain moved into the area about an hour and a half after the race was over.

The threat of rain in the forecast loomed over the race, but all 500 miles of the Indianapolis 500 were blessed with dry weather.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for a number of counties including:

  • Hancock County
  • Johnson County
  • Marion County
  • Shelby County
