Purdue plans to replicate, sell shirt seen in 'Stranger Things'

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WTHR) — If it wasn't already exciting enough that the hit Netflix show 'Stranger Things' is set in a fictitious town in Indiana, Purdue fans have even more reason to be elated.

In an episode of the show's third season, one of the extras is wearing a Purdue University t-shirt. Steve Harrington, played by Joe Keery, even makes a remark in the episode, recognizing the well-known public university.

Harrington wasn't the only one to notice the t-shirt, so was Purdue Licensing (as well as thousands of Boilermakers across the nation).

Manager of Trademarks and Licensing Erika Austin said CLC and Purdue licensees are currently working to get the shirts made. Austin said with the show being set in the '80s, it is taking a bit longer finding the style of garment, but regardless the garment will be made.

Austin said the university was unaware that they'd be mentioned in the latest season of the hit show, but are thrilled and said it's a proud moment for Boilermaker nation.

"The response has be great and the interest from our fans and retailers continues to grow. After seeing the interest and responses from our social media accounts, we felt it was important to act quickly to service the demand and emerging popularity of the garment," Austin said.

Once made, the shirt would be available at the Purdue Team Store, which has locations at the Purdue Memorial Union as well as Ross-Ade Stadium. It will also be available online at PurdueTeamStore.com.

It could be carried by other retailers as well, but more details regarding where it can be purchased will be available in the future.
