FRANKLIN, NC (WTHR) — Grieving the loss of a loved one is tough, but a funeral home in North Carolina is hoping to make the process a little easier.

Mochi, a Bernese Mountain dog puppy, is a grief/therapy dog in training at Macon Funeral Home.

It was all the idea of Office Admin Tori McKay who said she had the dream of getting a therapy dog for about 10 years.

On her 30th birthday, McKay and her husband bought Mochi as their family pet. But McKay wanted Mochi to have more of a purpose and to help people.

"It's my goal to work funeral visitations with Mochi (pronounced "mow-chee") when families request her, and I would also like to make visits to nursing homes in the evenings every couple weeks or so.It's my goal to work funeral visitations with Mochi when families request her, and I would also like to make visits to nursing homes in the evenings every couple weeks or so," McKay wrote on the funeral home's website.

She said Mochi makes an ideal addition to the funeral home because of the nature of her breed.

"The Bernese Mountain Dog is a very loyal, affectionate and gentle animal, and has always been my choice for a potential grief therapy dog. They have a history of being excellent therapy and support dogs, which comes from their kind disposition and laid-back personalities," McKay wrote.

Eventually Mochi will be sent to Asheville for training when she gets a bit older, but for now she's socializing at the funeral home and helping grieving families.
