Property tax credit trips up politicians

Indianapolis - The homestead property tax exemption is a popular tax break for homeowners, but there's one important caveat: You can only take one exemption.

But politicians nationwide are still getting dinged for claiming more than one exemption, sometimes paying back thousands in taxes to local governments.

Democrat Brendan Mullen is the latest candidate to pay back the errantly gathered break. He says he and his wife were accidentally collecting exemptions on their Washington home and her old condominium until earlier this month.

Mullen is running for Indiana's 2nd District seat in Congress.

Congressmen have routinely gotten caught taking the exemption in Washington and its suburbs while getting the break in their home states. Maryland lawmakers attempted to crack down on that in 2008.
