BILOXI, Mississippi (WTHR) - A Mississippi police officer is dead, and authorities are looking for his killer.

Police say the 24-year veteran with the Biloxi Police Department was shot and killed Sunday night outside a Biloxi police station.

"The animal that did this is still on the run,” said Biloxi Police Chief John Miller. “And we're going to do everything within our power to bring him to justice."

Police have not identified the fallen officer.

They are looking for a suspect they describe as a thin man between 5' 7" and 5' 10" tall.

He was wearing a black t-shirt, navy shorts and a red skull cap.

Officials have not shared additional information or a motive for the shooting.

"This is very different for us,” Miller said. “We have not had a shooting like this since I've been here and I think we would probably have to go back to the 70s before we could have anything similar."

The investigation has been turned over to the Gulfport Police Department.

“We prefer another agency from the outside handle this so it doesn't appear that we have done anything wrong,” Miller explained, “and besides, that it's just not healthy for our officers, our investigators, to try and investigate something that they are so close to and a person that they are so close to."
