Police investigating northeast side carjacking, police chase that ended in crash

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — IMPD is investigating a carjacking that occurred early Monday morning on the northeast side.

The Lawrence Police Department is assisting, as some officers from the department were involved in a pursuit that occurred after the carjacking.

According to Lawrence Police Chief Gary Woodruff, a suspect stole a car near 42nd Street and Post Road in IMPD's jurisdiction around 3:30 a.m. A short time later, Lawrence officers spotted the car near 42nd Street and Shadeland Avenue.

Lawrence officers tried to pull the vehicle over, but the driver didn't stop. They began a chase, and one of the people inside the stolen car allegedly fired at officers.

Woodruff said officers did not return fire and nobody was injured.

The car crashed a short distance later at Lennington Drive and Irwin Avenue.

There were three people inside the car, and police took all three into custody.
