INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Homicide detectives are trying to figure out if the city's most recent shooting is a crime or self-defense.

The shooting occurred late Friday afternoon on George Court in a west side neighborhood that's near W. 34th Street and Georgetown Road.

The victim was shot to death on the front lawn of home in what is typically a quiet neighborhood.

"Just two gunshots," said Andy Swails who lives a few houses away. "Next thing you know, I heard cop cars."

Before cops arrived, a neighbor ran over to help. He didn't want his name used, but said the suspected gunman told him he had no other choice but to shoot.

Chuckie Bauman ran over, too. He knows the victim and he's a friend of the gunman. They talked.

"He was, like, 'He reached for it.' The kid was known to carry a gun'," Bauman said. "He's got a gun on him right now."

Police said they found two guns at the scene and the shooter is cooperating, talking with detectives.

"It is being investigated as a homicide," said IMPD Ofc. Michael Hewitt. "Certainly self-defense could come up and be an issue as the detectives continue to interview the other person involved and witnesses."

The shooting puts Indianapolis one more lost life closer to a record-setting year for killings.

"Our detectives are going to work hard to get to the bottom of this case and all the other homicides that have happened in the city," Hewitt said.

In a city where police lights unfortunately too often out shine holiday lights.
