Police identify New Castle crash victims

NEW CASTLE - Police have identified a New Castle couple killed in a crash Tuesday night.

Stacy Sweigart, 32, and her husband Jason Sweigart, 30, were killed in the crash. They leave behind a young son.

The driver of the other vehicle involved, 67-year-old Samie McBride of New Castle, is in serious condition at Methodist hospital.

The crash happened around 8:45 p.m. on State Road 3 and Trojan Lane in New Castle. Police say a silver car, believed to be a Ford Taurus, was seen speeding and driving erratically southbound on State Road 3 when it rear-ended a red Plymouth Breeze that was "stopped or slowing" in the southbound lanes.

When emergency crews arrived, the Plymouth was on fire.

"We found one vehicle that was fully engulfed and another vehicle that was approximately anywhere from 75 to 100 feet south of that intersection near Spiceland Pike and State Road 3 that was inverted in the middle of the southbound lanes," said New Castle Police Chief James Nicholson.

Police say McBride was driving the silver Taurus. She was taken by Lifeline to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. She was reportedly in the intensive care unit with serious injuries early Wednesday morning.

Nicholson said a police officer had received a phone call about a light-colored car driving erratically and speeding on State Road 3 minutes before the crash.

State police assisted local officials at the scene. Nicholson says the results of their investigation will be turned over to the prosecutor's office for any possible charges.
