Indianapolis - Metro homicide detectives are working to identify the mother of a baby found in a dumpster, but details on the investigation are not being released.

According to police, the baby had on a diaper and was found Monday afternoon by a couple searching for scrap metal.

Investigators found the baby on top of the trash in the dumpster, which sat in the parking lot of an empty warehouse at 24th Street and Illinois.

An autopsy revealed some preliminary findings, but detectives are staying tight-lipped about the baby's sex, race and age right now.

However they have made significant progress in finding out who left the baby in the dumpster and why.

"All I can say is they have leads that they are working regarding the whole case," IMPD Sgt. Matt Mount said. "It's moving in a positive direction. There are still a number of things that have to be done to positively identify and to make sure they don't take a misstep."

Investigators want to hear from the public about anyone they know who was pregnant and no longer has their baby. Call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 262-TIPS.
