PITTSBORO, Ind. (WTHR) - A Pittsboro woman who is fighting cancer got the ride of a lifetime as part of a special wish arranged by her caregivers at Hendricks Regional Hospital.

Brenda Griffith has been battling the disease for years, but Thursday night, she faced a new fear - a sunset ride in a hot air balloon.

"I'm scared of heights, but I'm going to do it," she said.

Griffith climbed aboard the hot air balloon and took off soaring over Hendricks County, fulfilling a lifelong dream. The trip started with a hospital conversation with her cancer navigator, Eva Burgan, who asked if there was something she always wanted to do.

"She just makes all these notes all the time, because she's a cancer navigator, and she makes all these notes all the time and the next thing I know, I've got someone knocking on the door and saying, 'Hey! We got you a balloon ride!'," Griffith said.

Burgan says she's worked with Griffith for about six years and making dreams come true is all in a days work. Burgan shared the request with a co-worker.

"It's all about community and knowing people and connections and I felt the need to send a text to somebody I knew who could possibly help with this," said dietitian Katie DelGado.

A couple of text messages later, they had a balloon and a generous donor willing to finance the trip of a lifetime.

"If you look at everybody who's here and everybody who has been working with her for the last few years, everybody's just thrilled for her," Burgan said.

And a bucket list item fulfilled.

"You don't get things like this, so it's special. It's special," Griffith said.
