Pit bull credited for saving baby from house fire

STOCKTON, Calif. (KCRA) – A Stockton woman credits her pit bull with saving her and her baby's lives after the dog woke them up and alerted them to a house fire.

Baby Masailah and family dog Sasha came into this world just days apart, and instantly connected.

"She's in the bed everyday all the time, like they take baths together and everything," said Latana Chai.

Now at 8-months-old, that bond is even stronger after the family pup became the family hero.

Last Sunday night Sasha was in the back yard when Chai noticed she started behaving strangely.

"I heard like a loud bang and I was like ‘what's going on,’ and I heard Sasha crying, and she kept jumping at the door."

"As soon as I got to the door she runs in, starts barking."

She saw a fire spreading from the neighbor’s house to hers.

When Latana hurried back inside she found that Sasha had already made her way into the back bedroom.

"I ran into the room and I see Sasha - she has my baby like by the diaper - just dragging her off the bed trying to get her to safety."

The family credits those early warning barks and bangs with saving them.

"If she wasn't barking or really going at the door like that,” Latana said, “I probably wouldn't have known nothing."

A puppy and best friend - proving she's one special dog.
