INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — There is a shortage of electricians across the country and right here in Indiana.

IBEW Local 481 is working to spread the word about its apprenticeship program as an alternative to college.

The paid program has a starting wage of $16.30 an hour plus benefits.

The program includes five years of classroom instruction where you earn an associates degree.

You also get 8,000 hours on the job and graduate with no student debt.

"The message just hasn't reached everybody about how good the opportunity is, which is why the IBEW has ratcheted up our efforts. We've hit over 100 high schools in the last year trying to reach people at an earlier age to let them know that the IBEW, or the building trades in general, are an option for a career," said Lance Bradbury, IBEW Local 481 Business Representative.

Anyone who has completed high school can apply for the apprenticeship online.
