Police say they were chasing a stolen car when the driver lost control and crashed near Meridian and Gimber streets. The chase originated when the car was spotted at State Street and Walker Avenue.

Police say a female passenger in the car died at the scene.

"Anytime there's loss of life anywhere in the city, it's a tragedy, and this is an example of that. I would encourage the community that if an officer attempts to stop you, pull over," said IMPD Ofc. Michael Hewitt. "Unfortunately, this person was driving a stolen car and chose not to do that."

The driver was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition.
