Woman rescues frozen cat stuck to Interstate guardrail

A woman saw a post on Facebook about a cat thought to be sleeping on a highway's guardrail, but when she got there, she realized it was stuck on the frozen barrier.

MATTYDALE, New York (WSTM) - A woman in upstate New York saw a post on Facebook about a cat thought to be sleeping on a highway's guardrail.

But when she got there, she realized it wasn't sleeping -- it was stuck on the frozen barrier and couldn’t get free.

"Oh, she was so scared, and you could tell,” said Joyanna Lathrop, who came to the cat’s rescue. “she was just so tired and so cold."

"She looked at me when I got out and was like, 'Baby!' And she was like, 'Meoww.' And it was just the saddest thing."

The cat was in a life and death situation with at least two of its paws and tail frozen to the interstate guardrail.

Lathrop said she tried hot coffee and water to melt the ice.

But her ice scraper was what finally allowed the cat to break loose.

"I wrapped it up in a blanket that I had in my car. It just wanted to be held. Every time I tried putting it on the seat next to me, it crawled back on me, crying," she said.

Once at a veterinary hospital, the cat whose name is now "Elsa" from the movie Frozen, was checked out and found to be in pretty good shape.

The New York SPCA says Elsa is not ready for adoption just yet.
