NEW YORK (WTHR) – A woman dropped her AirPod earbud on subway tracks in New York and was determined to get it back.

When Ashley Mayer first lost the AirPod last week, she took to Twitter to mourn the loss.

"The AirPod fell out of my ear several feet away from the edge of the subway platform, but I’ve never seen anything more inevitable," Mayer wrote on Twitter. "RIP little buddy. Thanks for all the podcasts."

The next day, back at the subway, Mayer discovered the AirPod had survived overnight on the tracks and was then determined to rescue it.

"I think I need to rescue him," Mayer continued in a Twitter thread. "Game on."

Mayer ran to the store and grabbed some supplies to create a makeshift AirPod grabber: an angled broom and duct tape.

When there was no train coming, Mayer reached down with the broom and successfully rescued her missing AirPod, which was still intact but covered in subway dirt and grime.

“AirPod has been thoroughly cleaned and is now recharging,” Mayer wrote. “Please send thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery.”

Then Mayer put up a poll an Twitter, asking whether or not she should put the AirPod back in her ear – after thorough cleaning of course. 45 percent of people said 'don't do it.'

"I dedicate this selfie to the germaphobes," she wrote under a picture of herself with both buds in. "You may be onto something, guess we'll see!"
