Unopened copy of Super Mario Bros video game sells for record $100K

A copy of the Super Mario Bros. video game is setting a new record.

(WTHR) – A copy of the Super Mario Bros. video game is setting a new record.

An unopened copy of the Nintendo game released in 1985 sold for a record breaking $100,150, according to Dallas-based auction house, Heritage Auctions.

The video game was purchased by a group of collectors February 6.

"Beyond the artistic and historical significance of this game is its supreme state of preservation," says Kenneth Thrower, co-founder and chief grader of Wata Games.

Because the game was so popular, Nintendo reprinted several different versions of Super Mario Bros. However, the first two versions were the only ones to be "sticker sealed" and were only sold in New York and Los Angeles.

The record breaking copy of the game is the only known "sticker sealed" copy and was certified by Wata Games with a Near Mint grade of 9.4 and a "Seal Rating" of A++.
