HONEA PATH, S.C. (WTHR) - A South Carolina car dealership is giving away a gun and a Bible with car purchases, but says it is "not taking a political stance" with the offer.

Carolina Ford in Honea Path announced the "Gods, Guns and America" promotion on Facebook last week after brainstorming ways to get customers to their dealership in Honea Path, south of Greenville.

General Manager Derrick Hughes told WYFF-TV the staff started talking about hunting and decided to give away an AR as part of the deal. Hughes said most people in the area have a shotgun or pistol and use ARs for hunting wild hogs and coyotes.

“We are not taking a political stance in any way shape or form," Hughes said. “We are all country folk, God-fearing people. We are very patriotic people, believe in our country and salute our military.”

The promotion, which includes a Bible and U.S. flag along with a voucher for the firearm, runs through November. Customers must go through a background check to get the AR, but can also select a different firearm or other items.

“We are not forcing anyone to take the gun. They can use the voucher for sporting equipment, fishing or archery equipment," Hughes said. “They can also choose a different gun.”

Hughes said most of the feedback to the promotion has been positive, though the dealership has gotten some negative feedback about including the Bible in the deal.
